This uniquely structured play has 57 characters, which will be played by six
or more actors. For audition purposes, we have selected some of the
characters (listed below).

Father (Male; 30-40)
-
Head of household in 1940’s. Upper-middle class—WASP. Opinionated,
traditional, and particular. Etiquette/manners and appearances matter. Disruptions to
his sense of order, are met with a firmness and defense of his position. He loves his
family, but wants to control all aspects of their lives.
* Grace
(Female; 30-40)

Mother, 1950’s housewife, upper middle class—WASP. Appearances matter to her, and
she likes to keep things neat and tidy. She is tightly wound and energetic. She seems
to keep a detailed running “To-Do” list in her head at all times. She’d like to appear
flexible to her teenage daughter, Carolyn, but is not. Her growing frustration with
Carolyn’s choices forces her to reveal a family secret.
* Architect (Male; 30+)

A high-end, busy, and talented architect. He is great at conveying innovative design
ideas to his upper-middle class clientele. He is an excellent communicator/salesman.
He’s excited to try new designs, and steer his clients from the current popular trends.
He has some unresolved childhood issues that he inadvertently tells to his client; a
psychiatrist.
* Peggy (Female; 20-30)

Mother in her 20s or 30s, in the late 1950’s, early 1960’s. She is sweet and caring. She,
however, is in a loveless marriage, and on the verge of starting an affair with a family
friend, Ted. She enjoys throwing parties (children’s birthday and adult dinner) She
makes entertaining look effortless. Changing everything for love within the boundaries
and “rules” of her upper-middle class life, is tempting, but complicated.
*Grandfather (Male; 80+)

Successful business-man in his eighties. He has worked hard for his wealth and is
generous with his family. He does, however, question their values and worries about
their futures. He is direct, wise, and charming. Beneath his gruff/no-nonsense exterior
is a caring, family man, nostalgic for the past.
*Paul (Male; 30+)

Craftsman/carpenter/woodworking expert. Former stock-broker. Could be Italian or
Greek; good looking. Comfortable with himself and grateful for his chosen second
career.
*Aunt Harriet (Female; 60-70)

Proud of her crystal, silver, and china collection. She is
sincere in her devotion to the objects of her past. She is oblivious of the pretentiousness
of her former lifestyle. She becomes deeply offended when she discovers that anyone
would judge or look down on her heritage and traditions.
*Jim (Male; 60-70)

Father and grandfather in his 60s or 70s. Enjoying his current life with his wife and no
children or grandchildren in the house. Likes having a nightly cocktail (or two). Loves his
family, but would prefer to not alter his current lifestyle to accommodate their needs.
Practical, devoted, and upbeat.
*Standish (Male; 30+)

Head of household in the 1950’s. Husband of Emily, father of David and Claire, brother
to Henry. He is proud, reactive, caring, and traditional. He takes himself seriously and
his sense of duty is deep. He is typically high functioning, but falls apart because of the
current circumstances that arise. He is dramatic, and leans towards melo-drama in the
way he expresses himself.
*Harvey (Male; 80-90)

In his 80s or 90s. Father, husband, friend, and grandfather. A golfer and fisherman. He
is successful, confident, practical, thoughtful, and deeply devoted to his friends and
family. He is determined to have his funeral be arranged according to what is most
important to him. He loves and respects his eldest son.
