Auditions for The Dining Room by AR Gurney

Synopsis:
Constructed as a series of interrelated vignettes all taking place in the dining room of a well-to-do household, the play takes an in-depth look at the lives of a vanishing species: the upper-class WASP. The ensemble cast has actors changing roles, personalities, and ages as they portray a slice-of-life view from many different families. The varied scenes dovetail and coalesce into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor, and abundant humanity.

* Father (Male; 30-40)
-
Head of household in 1940’s. Upper-middle class—WASP. Opinionated, traditional, and particular. Etiquette/manners and appearances matter. Disruptions to his sense of order, are met with a firmness and defense of his position. He loves his family, but wants to control all aspects of their lives.
* Grace  (Female; 30-40)
-
Mother, 1950’s housewife, upper middle class—WASP. Appearances matter to her, and she likes to keep things neat and tidy. She is tightly wound and energetic. She seems to keep a detailed running “To-Do” list in her head at all times. She’d like to appear flexible to her teenage daughter, Carolyn, but is not. Her growing frustration with Carolyn’s choices forces her to reveal a family secret.
* Architect (Male; 30+)
-
A high-end, busy, and talented architect. He is great at conveying innovative design ideas to his upper-middle class clientele. He is an excellent communicator/salesman. He’s excited to try new designs, and steer his clients from the current popular trends. He has some unresolved childhood issues that he inadvertently tells to his client; a psychiatrist.
* Peggy  (Female; 20-30)
-
Mother in her 20s or 30s, in the late 1950’s, early 1960’s. She is sweet and caring. She, however, is in a loveless marriage, and on the verge of starting an affair with a family friend, Ted. She enjoys throwing parties (children’s birthday and adult dinner) She makes entertaining look effortless. Changing everything for love within the boundaries and “rules” of her upper-middle class life, is tempting, but complicated.
*Grandfather (Male; 80+)
-
Successful business-man in his eighties. He has worked hard for his wealth and is generous with his family. He does, however, question their values and worries about their futures. He is direct, wise, and charming. Beneath his gruff/no-nonsense exterior is a caring, family man, nostalgic for the past.
*Paul (Male; 30+)
-
Craftsman/carpenter/woodworking expert. Former stock-broker. Could be Italian or Greek; good looking. Comfortable with himself and grateful for his chosen second career.
*Aunt Harriet (Female; 60-70)
-
Proud of her crystal, silver, and china collection. She is sincere in her devotion to the objects of her past. She is oblivious of the pretentiousness of her former lifestyle. She becomes deeply offended when she discovers that anyone would judge or look down on her heritage and traditions.
*Jim (Male; 60-70)
-
Father and grandfather in his 60s or 70s. Enjoying his current life with his wife and no children or grandchildren in the house. Likes having a nightly cocktail (or two). Loves his family, but would prefer to not alter his current lifestyle to accommodate their needs. Practical, devoted, and upbeat.
*Standish (Male; 30+)
-
Head of household in the 1950’s. Husband of Emily, father of David and Claire, brother to Henry. He is proud, reactive, caring, and traditional. He takes himself seriously and his sense of duty is deep. He is typically high functioning, but falls apart because of the current circumstances that arise. He is dramatic, and leans towards melo-drama in the way he expresses himself.
*Harvey (Male; 80-90)
-
In his 80s or 90s. Father, husband, friend, and grandfather. A golfer and fisherman. He is successful, confident, practical, thoughtful, and deeply devoted to his friends and family.
